6 Skills for Successful Teaching Career

If you’re teacher or just started your teaching career or aspire to be one day then head onto this article.

So the first & foremost skill to be a successful teacher is

  1. Research Oriented Mindset :- Suppose if you want to take a 1 hour long lecture then there should be the research of 10 hours on what you’re going to teach & how you’re going to teach. Your content should be powerful enough for your students to deliver value. Search on internet, watch videos, read as much book as you can. You should have a mindset like if any students ask any question to you then you should be able to deliver the solution instantly.

2. Communication Skills:- If you’re teacher then it’s a must have skill for you to convey your message clearly to your students. This is not only limited to verbal communication it also includes written communication. You should be good in both verbal & written communication.

Mostly people confuses the communication skills with the knowledge of certain languages. It doesn’t matter which language you speak whether it be Hindi, English, Marathi or French what matter is your message should be clear & should reach to the students sitting in the last bench of the class.

3. Presentation Skills :- Do not confuse this with the communication skills as both are very different from each other. Communication is all bout how you speak, how’s your body language & etc.

Presentation skill on the other hand is how you present yourself in front of your audience. For this you can use story telling, like if you want to explain any topic try to use real life topics, use visuals, animations because when you teach with the practical examples your students are more likely to relate & remember that topic for longtime. Which will make your student to engage with you more & more & they’re most likely to not miss your classes. If you want to master the skill of presentation always practice that how you’re going to teach & what you’re going to teach before your class.

4. Creative Thinking Skills :- It is nothing but how you explain any topic to your students in a creative way, how you make your student to experience that thing. In fact the draft of National Education Policy of India gives much importance to this experimental bases learning.

For example if you’re teaching about parliament then what you can do is divide the class on two opposition parties. If you make them understand in this way it will be much easier for students to understand any topic & this creative thinking is not just limited to education only it is involved in many fields.

If you look forward for next 10-20 years from now every job which doesn’t involve creative thinking is going to get vanished. You’ve seen the Tesla’s driverless car which has replace the driver. So in next 10-20 years tesla is going to vanish the need of driver because driving is such kind of profession which doesn’t involve creative thinking, It is just a skill only.

In fact the robot has entered in education industry also , we’ve seen a book reader & in future there will be AI based robot which will not only teach students but they will also have the details of each & every student. That’s why it is important to run your mind towards the creative / critical thinking.

5. Patience :- Patience is the quality which every student must have & I have seen teacher who looses there patience in there initial days of teaching. In you classroom you have to deal with the student of different background, there cultural background will be different, there social background will differ, there financial background will be different & a lot of difference in behavior of each & every student & you have to deal with al of them. If you get impulsive because of anyone’s behavior & take impulsive action then the major consequence of that will be faced by you. But this doesn’t mean that if someone is misbehaving then you stop punishing them. Punishment is also important when it is required but that punishment should not come out of your impulsive behavior. That punishment should be genuine & harmless & for that you must be patient enough to handle this kind of situation. But I agree that tis quality is not something like I say you today & you will act tomorrow It will take time but you will master it slowly.

6. Adaptability :- Last but not the least. Adaptability is required in very field but in teaching line technological adaptability is very important & we’ve learned this during lockdown period. We’ve to adopt the technology  very fast & In fact the teachers have adapted the technology very well & that’s why now & for the future also we have to be prepared because as you can see daily new technology is coming & it is important for you to walk along with the technology & know how to use that technology correctly. As we have discussesd earlier about the AI because the coming future is of Ai (Artificial Intelligence) & robots only.

So you don’t have to resist the new technology & take it in negative way because if not today then tomorrow the new technology is going to be an integral part of our education system.
